Is a Cosmopolitan Sweet? A Guide to Its Taste
A Cosmopolitan is usually fruity and citrusy, with sweetness balanced by tart cranberry and fresh lime. Its pink colour does not mean it should taste like syrup. The final balance depends on the orange liqueur, cranberry drink and quantities you use.

What gives a Cosmo its flavour?
- Vodka: the spirit base; citrus vodka adds a citrus note.
- Orange liqueur: orange aroma, sweetness and alcohol. Cointreau is one example of triple sec.
- Cranberry: fruit, colour and tartness, with sweetness depending on the product.
- Fresh lime: acidity and a fresh citrus aroma.

Cranberry drink or pure cranberry juice?
Check the ingredients and sugar information on the carton. A sweetened cranberry juice drink and unsweetened pure cranberry juice are not interchangeable in flavour. Juice blends also vary. Keep the same product while adjusting your recipe so that you can tell what changed.
How to adjust the balance
What if it tastes too sweet?
First check whether you used sweetened lime cordial instead of fresh lime. For the next drink, use fresh juice as written. If it still needs more acidity, add lime a little at a time; changing several ingredients at once makes the result harder to judge.
What if it tastes too sharp?
Check whether you used unsweetened cranberry juice. Next time, try the cranberry drink specified in the recipe or reduce the lime slightly. Taste before adding extra syrup: the orange liqueur already contributes sweetness.
Does a darker colour mean a sweeter drink?
No. Cranberry products differ in colour and sugar content. Measure the ingredients and taste the result instead of judging by colour alone. Shake with ice and serve in a chilled cocktail glass.
